Touching stories, not touching screens, are at the heart of Brooklands museum.

Normally, the exhibits are the focus of a visit to a museum. If you need to know more about the displays, you read the information, or interact with a screen. But Brooklands is different – the volunteers who work there have as much to offer as the displays.

Brooklands, the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation, has always felt like a very special place to me. My Uncle Tom raced a car there in the track’s early days, my Granddad worked in the wind tunnels, and I grew up just down the road. It’s part of my family history, and I feel a sense of connection to the men and women of my late granddad’s generation who volunteer there.

Impressed by the volunteers’ dedication and humbled by their kindness, I decided to record some of these incredible individuals. I spent two days photographing and interviewing them for a mini photographic series, ‘Volunteer’.

The Elmbridge and Kingston magazines featured the series in April 2016.
