Salamander / The Detransitioners

Photography, Editorial

A photography and storytelling series about women detransitioners.

What happens when trans men change their mind and want to become women again?

Detransitioners have chosen the salamander as their mascot, represented by the lizard emoji on social media to identify themselves, due to its ability to regenerate organs and limbs. For the women who fully surgically transitioned, they will never be able to regenerate or replace their missing organs. But it’s not too much to hope that they can regenerate a healthy identity and feel emotionally and psychologically complete as the women they are.

I researched the subject with doctors, therapists, nurses, endocrinologists, parents and detransitioners and I photographed and interviewed seven women detransitioners.

“I want to work on accepting my body exactly the way it is now. This is what should have been encouraged from the beginning.” - Ellie

Salamander / The Detransitioners was published by The Sunday Times, with an article by me. The full series of photographs and interviews is now published on Medium.
